So how does a Secular Jew from Israel end up joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints?
It all started many years ago, in Thailand, where a young girl of 13 met a couple of missionaries and recognized the truth. This led to her baptism and confirmation, without the support of the rest of her family.
Fast forward 7 years... The girl is a young woman managing a guest house in Bangkok. Along come three loud, funny, obnoxious guys from Israel. They turn her life around. Despite an immediate interest for one, she ends up falling for another. They end up getting married and living in Israel, where Mormonism is not publicly known nor practiced.
Fast forward another 11 years, and they find themselves in Massachusetts, living among the "gentiles". This triggers the memory of a warm ward family and she ventures out to find her long lost religious affiliation. He does not mind: if it is good for her, it is OK for him...
Flashback: Israel, Yom Kippur, circa 1980... Mom had been cooking the entire day. Friends will be arriving shortly. I still don't understand why we must have a feast, when all of our neighbors are fasting. It has just been this way for the longest time. Mom claims it is simply because this is an opportune time with people being on "vacation", but I know this is no vacation meal. It is more of a revenge for everything bad that religion has ever done to her.
Back at the church, the missionaries find a great new target, and the lessons start. It takes 3 years and many sets of missionaries (including a couple who were driven to tears when he announces that he is done and does not wish to pursue with additional lessons), until his baptism on 1/1/2006.
Now he is a humble holder of the Melchizedek priesthood, and the Gospel Doctrine teacher. The father of 3 grand spirits, and long life friend to that girl who started it all. Life is ever-changing but good.
